The CBJEF’s Book Bank in Bangalore was started in the year 1958, mainly to lend expensive and valuable reference books to Engineering and Medical students in Bangalore, at a time when it was difficult to access such books. In the beginning, the CBJEF and its Book Bank functioned from a very small portion of Canara Bank’s Administrative Office. The books, kept in a small cupboard, were issued during weekly holidays (when the Bank was not working), with the help of volunteers.
In November 1989, the services of Shri K. Ramachandra Shenoy (Retd. Senior Manager, Canara Bank) were availed and the Book Bank was further strengthened. Sometime during the early nineties, the Book Bank was shifted to a portion of the building at Dwarakanath Bhavan (which housed Canara Bank’s Staff Training College) on K.R. Road, Basavanagudi, in South Bangalore. Books were issued on Fridays & Saturdays with the help of a qualified librarian and student volunteers.
During August-September 2012, CBJEF and its Book Bank were relocated to larger premises provided by the Bank on the third floor of the same building, with necessary infrastructure and ambiance. The Book Bank had expanded to include about 14,000 books, covering various branches of Engineering and Medicine, including Dental and Ayurveda courses, as well as P.G. entrance examinations, along with comprehensive collections and latest editions. This enabled students to pursue their academic interests of their choice and come out with flying colours. Many have gone on to successful careers, making it a mutually beneficial experience for all involved.
Those who have crossed the portals of this unique organization and moved on, include well-known names and luminaries, such as Dr. H. Sudarshan (“Padmashree” & Right Livelihood Awardee), Dr. Prashanth Acharya (well-known practitioner and promoter of an Ayurvedic College and Hospital), Shri. L.V. Prasad, Engineer & Scientist at ISRO (Retd.), Dr. Veena H. Bhat (Engineering Professor & Academician) and Dr. H.N. Srigouri (Sr. Ophthalmologist).
In 2013, a significant project was undertaken to digitize the Book Bank database of books and student members. This Library Automation System was officially inaugurated by Shri R.K. Dubey, CMD of Canara Bank, in September 2014. The system operates efficiently with routine maintenance and updates. Students can borrow books for three months and renew over the phone as needed.
CBJEF’s Book Banks are now available at two Government Engineering Colleges, two Government Polytechnics, a Government Ayurvedic Medical College, and the Bangalore University Centre for Yoga Studies, all situated in Bangalore.
Textbook Banks are established at 33 Government Pre-University Colleges located in the districts of Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Shimoga, and Bangalore. Additionally, three of these centres are equipped with Computer Labs and are transitioning into digital libraries.
