CBJEF, Spreading Education & Enlightenment

The CBJEF was promoted and set up by Canara Bank in the year 1956 with the noble objective of spreading education and enlightenment. It was the first institutional framework envisaged by Canara Bank as part of the social welfare measures launched in 1956 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Canara Bank. At the Bank, ever since inception, social development had been adopted as a corporate philosophy along with business development, in tune with the cherished ideals of the founder of Canara Bank – Shri Ammembal Subba Rao Pai. The Education Fund was a small but sincere step aimed at promoting and encouraging higher technical and scientific education by extending financial support (loan scholarships) to deserving, needy students and thereby enabling them to pursue mainly Engineering and Medical degree courses. At a time when access to education especially higher education was very difficult, this was indeed a pioneering step.

The CBJEF became a Registered Society on 11th April 1956. The CBJEF started a “Book Bank” in the year 1958, to lend books to engineering & medical students in Bangalore.

Objective

The main objective was to promote and encourage higher technical and scientific education by extending financial assistance(loan scholarship) to deserving students pursuing Engineering and Medical courses. The broader objectives included encouragement and support, both for formal and non-formal education in different ways. In a ways, it was a pioneering effort at a time when it was difficult to pursue professional courses.

To promote & encourage the pursuit of higher technical education and scientific education, by extending loan scholarships to deserving students for higher studies (this was discontinued after Banks started their educational loan schemes).
Lending valuable reference books, mainly to Engineering / Medical students through CBJEF’s Book Bank.
The broader objectives included participation and support, both for formal and non-formal educational activities, in tune with the basic ideals.

Steady Progress

In the course of time, the CBJEF’s participation in formal and non-formal educational activities grew, and it has since come a long way, expanding its reach, with new, prominent initiatives & activities, in tune with the changing times and technology. The CBJEF has been functioning as an independent Registered Society and funding for all activities is largely through donations and endowments from philanthropists and well-wishers – individual / institutional donors.

Management

The CBJEF has a progressive Governing Body, which meets regularly to review the activities and plan future courses of action.
A small complement of dedicated volunteers help to implement the activities of the Education Fund.
Annual Reports, along with an audited Balance Sheet, are tabled in the Annual General Meetings (AGMs) held at the close of every financial year.

Governing Body

The CBJEF has a progressive governing body comprising seven members. Out of this, four are nominated by Canara Bank (two are serving executives of the Bank and the other two could be serving / retired executives of the Bank). Three more members are elected at the Annual General Meeting of the CBJEF. There is also a provision for two coopted members on the governing body of the CBJEF. All the members are generally expected to have a background of the sponsor Bank/CBJEF/educational arena.
The two serving executives of the Bank nominated to the governing body of the CBJEF function as the Hon.President (executive from Human Resources Wing, Canara Bank, H.O.) and Hon.Secretary (executive from Financial Inclusion Wing, Canara Bank, H.O.) respectively of CBJEF.
